Ute Lake Fishing Report

May 8th, 2008   Water temp = 60 degrees

If the wind stops blowing this lake would be on an excellent bite.  The fishing is good, but the wind makes it harder to control the boat.  The fish certainly to not care about a 3 foot chop.

Walleye fishing remains constant -- good to very good.  I have been using minnows on the bottom near the main channel in 10-30 feet of water.  You must use a slow presentation to get limits.  Trolling also is producing some fish, but not in large numbers.

Smallmouth are on an excellent bite on the flats (8-10 ft) near the main river channels.  We caught several 18-19 inch Smallies on minnows while Wally fishing.  Bass fishermen are also getting quite a few Black bass up in the coves and main points in the lake.  Bass fishermen are rather "mum" on what they are catching them on.

Crappie are with in a week or so from spawning.  Many are being caught up the rivers in 6-8 feet of water.  Use minnows or throw 2 inch grubs and work them slowly back to the boat.

A few White Bass are being caught in the mouth of the deeper coves, but I have yet to catch any in big numbers.

Catfish are hitting, but very few people are fishing for them right now due to the Crappie and Walleye bite.  I would fish up the Canadian in 6-8 feet of water with minnows and/or stink bait.

The fishing has been excellent overall the past week except for the wind.  I expect the fish to be very co-operative the next week and it will only get better.
